Jeffrey Carl Smith was born in Winchester, Tennessee on October 8, 1966. He was reared in middle Tennessee until he graduated from high school in 1984 and joined the United States Army. While in the United States Army, Mr. Smith was assigned to the U.S. Army Medical Corp. and worked as an orthopedic technician from 1984 until 1988. While serving in the medical field, he received extensive training in the areas of various aspects of the healthcare industry. The clinical and administrative experience he received during this period has served him well throughout his career as an attorney.

Upon leaving the service, Mr. Smith enrolled at The University of Alabama and received his bachelor of science degree in healthcare management in 1991. Mr. Smith received numerous awards throughout his undergraduate career and graduated as the highest-ranked graduate in healthcare management.

Mr. Smith then enrolled in The University of Alabama School of Law where he earned his juris doctorate in 1995. He was a member of the Bench and Bar Honor Society and the Federalist Society from 1992 until 1995. He served as president of the Federalist Society from 1992 until 1993. The following year, from 1994 until 1995, he served as senator and chairman of the Student Bar Association Senate.

He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the American College of Trial Lawyers Award, American Judicature Society Award, Edmond & Vines Scholarship, George “Peach” Taylor Award for Advocacy, American Jurisprudence Award, and ATLA Best Advocate in Region Award in 1995. He was ATLA Trial Advocacy Regional Champion in 1994 and 1995 and a competitor on the ATLA National Trial Advocacy Team and the NACDL National Trial Advocacy Team.

A Leadership Tuscaloosa graduate, Mr. Smith is a member of the Alabama State Bar, American Bar Association, Alabama Trial Lawyers Association and The Association of Trial Lawyers of America. He is also active in his local church where he has served as a deacon. Mr. Smith is also a member of the adjunct faculty at Shelton State Community College where he lectures on Business Law and in Paralegal Studies. He is also a former member of the board of directors of Tuscaloosa County Homebuilders Association, and serves as General Counsel to the Association.

Mr. Smith has been board certified by the National Association of Trial Advocacy as a Board Certified Civil Trial Advocate. He has extensive experience in the courtroom from his first exposure as a clerk for the Honorable Thomas S. Wilson in 1993 through the present. Mr. Smith has served as lead counsel in numerous jury trials as well as bench trials throughout the state. He also practices in the surrounding states on an as-needed basis.
